My New Dirty Little Pleasure

Updated: Nov 10, 2020

I am not really sure how I fell into soap making. It just sort of happened. Perhaps I was scrolling through Pinterest and saw an add for DIY soap. I honestly really couldn't tell you how I began this dirty little addiction. What I do know is I have always loved essential oils and the positive effect their scent has on my mood. The scent of essential oils provides a powerful stimuli to the brain, often times triggering some sort of emotional response. Studies have shown that aromatherapy is very effective at combatting stress, anxiety and depression. I have used aromatherapy personally for years to overcome the emotional and physical strains of stress and sleeplessness.

Let's face it, 2020 has created a whole new level of stress for many people. My husband and I experienced a whole slue of stressful situations since the start of the new year. One of the largest stressors for me was the loss of my job. Having way too much time on my hands and feeling uneasy about my future, I needed to find something to keep myself busy and to take my mind off from things. Idle hands have never been good for my psyche, so I started making soap. I instantly found soap making to be exceptionally therapeutic. Adding essential oils made the experience even more calming. Before long, I was producing dozens of bars of soap and jars upon jars of bath soaks just about every day. I'm sure my husband was wondering what on earth I was doing, but fortunately for me, he is really supportive and knew better than to ask too many questions. He also seemed to appreciate the bars of soap I had given him to use.

Soon, I was giving bars of soap and bath soaks to friends and family, many of whom encouraged me to start selling it. Soap making is still relatively new to me, so the idea of selling it seemed pretty far fetched at first. As I started to perfect my soap making skills and learn more about the soap making market I finally figured, what the heck? Why not give selling my soaps a try? This soon led to creating other fun products like body scrubs, candles and culinary herb mixes. I now have my own website and am selling my products at a few art and craft shows. Who knows how long or how far this venture will go, but for now, I am loving it! Thank you 2020!

Parting thoughts - No matter what kind of dirty mess life throws at you, always pick yourself up, dust yourself off and just keep moving. And always, always, have access to a good bar of soap.
